The Japanese firm Case-Real designed a house in Tsurumaki, Tokyo, that is rectangular at the front and hexagonal at the back, which means that sunlight continuously shines into the living room from dawn until dusk.

Although the site for the project had the North side facing the street and the other three sides neighboring the other houses, the client wished for a living room on the South side full of sun light. To accommodate this, the architect used a hexagonal plan that created space for additional windows which were set at 30-degree angles and not facing directly towards neighboring houses.

The house has a small parking space for a compact car, but also two bedrooms and a guest room, storage spaces, a balcony and toilets on each floor.

Home electronics and interior design are not always good friends, especially when you are trying to use a certain style or colour and all the TV sets or sound systems look almost the same. Not to mention that they don’t look really nice when the budget is not big enough for the high end ones.

The answer to some problems is the Transparent Speaker from People People, that will never clash with the interior decoration. Due to the transparency of the glass-based design the speaker easily blends into any living room and it sits nicely with any decor.

The system uses carefully developed high quality audio components and materials and it is physically big enough to provide great sound quality. And you don’t have to worry about cables either because the speaker is compatible with any wireless technology so it will play your music without cables directly from any device or software through a small WiFi antenna that can be plugged into any computer, smartphone, old stereos or vinyl equipment. People People even created a slot that fits the AirPort Express perfectly.

All the components can be replaced or recycled when or if they break, but the users never have to discard the whole product. Being so sustainable, the speaker also comes as a kit, without the glass panels. This option is reducing the need for shipping by 50%.

Artist Julio Garcia from Price Street Projects used the industrial containers to create a modern, stylish and minimalist home in the Savannah Woods, Georgia. His design actually blends into the lush scenery and it suggests that nature is reclaiming and healing the world.

But contrasting with the rough exterior that is left to the nature, the inside of the container home has a contemporary look with clean and simple open spaces. Also, the original loading doors were left functional and they can be open to bring the interior into direct contact with the nature.

Price Street Project specializes in building structures made from shipping containers, blending art and architecture to explore the boundaries of the traditional model.

Pintofeed is the world’s first pet feeder that truly understands the needs of you and your pet. It is an elegant hardware device that will program itself around your life and the wellness of your precious pet.

The automated pet feeder connects to Internet using Wi-Fi and dispenses meals when you touch your smartphone display. The device learns the pet’s meal habits and creates a personalized schedule. The feedings will even be notified via text, Twitter or Facebook.

Pintofeed offers a 5 and 10 pound food repository that have specially designed freshness seals for keeping the food from going stale.

Designed by London-based conceptual designer and futurist Phil Pauley, the Sub-Biosphere 2 is an ultimate seasteading dream. It’s the original self sustainable underwater habitat for aquanauts, tourism and oceanographic life sciences and long term human, plant and animal habitation.

This unique underwater home sustains all its life support systems for air, water, food, electricity, and other resources through an innovative control of variant atmospheric pressures that occur at depth.

The Sub-Biosphere 2 has eight Living Biomes which allow human, plant and fresh water interaction, powered and controlled by the Central Support Biome which monitors the life systems from within its own operations facility. 100 people could live in these Biomes thanks to the hydroponic crops.

Forty stories of the Central pod will rise above sea level, while another twenty will be submerged. The individual ones will have ten stories above water and ten beneath the surface, creating a 1,106 foot (337 meters) wide complex.

According to the Detox Catwalk platform, brands like Benetton, H&M, Mango, Esprit or Levi’s are pushing forward with concrete action towards their Detox goals, showing commitment and matching their words with concrete action.

The report also shows that sportswear giants Nike, adidas and Li Ning have failed to follow through on their commitments to clean up their toxic habits and continue to hide their collective inaction behind paper promises and industry working groups.

Greenpeace demands fashion brands to commit to zero discharge of all hazardous chemicals by 2020 and require their suppliers to disclose all releases of toxic chemicals from their facilities to communities at the site of the water pollution.

Widely used in medical appliances for children, the acrylic plastic is lightweight, hygienic, easy to wash and strong. The surface of the crib is also treated to obtain improved optical transparency, repel dirt and can be cleaned with just a dry cloth, without use of chemical detergents. But even more impressive, Due to photo catalytic effect of nano particles of titanium dioxide, contained in the liquid polymer base, the coating degrades dirt and air pollution on sunshine. This happens when exposed to sun surfaces start ionizing the air around, purifying it from pollution and smells.

A research paper offering specific technical details will be released in March next year, while the first prototype design will be presented for construction bidding in June.

JumpStartFund will help HTT build a team of 30 to 50 people who will work on the Hyperloop design in the coming months. Also, HTT is partnering with major engineering and manufacturing firms that will provide manufacturing support, architectural design and urban planning.

The former SpaceX mission director Dr. Marco Villa and Dr. Patricia Galloway, the former president of the American Society of Civil Engineers, will provide technical advice and leadership. Interim CEO Dirk Ahlborn, also the CEO and founder of JumpStartFund, will handle the administrative direction of the project.

According to the development milestones, the working prototype should make the first demonstrations in 2015. If all goes well, the solar-powered high-speed train will transport passengers at speeds of up to 700 mph between Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The Phoneblock seemed to be an Utopian idea, but Motorola is making it real. The Google-owned handset company announced Project Ara, which is developing a free, open hardware platform for creating modular, open and customizable smartphones. This means that the owner can choose a certain display, keyboard, camera, memory or battery.

Users will also be allowed to change the broken modules or upgrade them, so they will be able to keep their smartphones longer than it happens today.

„We want to do for hardware what the Android platform has done for software: create a vibrant third-party developer ecosystem, lower the barriers to entry, increase the pace of innovation, and substantially compress development timelines”, according to the official Motorola blog.

The design for Project Ara consists of an endoskeleton and modules. The endo is the frame that holds all the modules in place, while a module can be be anything, from a new application processor to a new display or keyboard, an extra battery, a pulse oximeter or a new technology that doesn’t even exist yet.

Motorola has been working at Project Ara for over a year and recently met the creator of Phoneblocks because his project has a comunity with nearly a million supporters. Developers will be invited to build modules for the platform in the next months and an alpha version of a module developers kit might be available this winter.

Competition is driving down the price of the space trips even before the first flight. A new company – World View Enterprises – offers suborbital flights with a capsule lifted by a helium balloon and the price is less than a third of what Virgin Galactic is charging. Just 75,000 USD.

The project is very similar to Felix Baumgartner's trip in the Red Bull Stratos, but the passengers will not jump from the capsule. Instead, the World View will be piloted down to the landing spot.

There is room for eight people in the capsule and they will be able to stand and walk around, enjoying the luxurious comfort and sipping some beverage while looking at the blackness of space and the curvature of Earth.

The trips could start as soon as 2016.

World View is a subsidiary of Paragon, which makes equipment for the International Space Station. Paragon also plans to send people to Mars by 2018.

Smog could be soon removed from the big polluted cities with an “electronic vacuum cleaner” developed by the Dutch designer Daan Roosegaarde. He is now working with the mayor of Beijing to use the new technology against the well-known pollution issues.

The concept uses buried coils of copper to create an electrostatic field that attracts smog particles and create a perimeter of clean air. “It creates these holes of 50-60 metres of clean air so you can see the sun again”, explained the Dutch designer for Dezeen Magazine.

The coils can be buried beneath the grass of a park and the particles will drop on the ground to be collected, acording to Roosegaarde. He will spend the next 18 months developing the technology before starting his work in the Chinese capital.

Although it will not eliminate the pollution in Beijing, it can bring temporary relief in the city where the Environmental Monitoring Center recently warned children, the elderly and those with heart and breathing problems to stay indoors due to extreme levels of pollutants in the air.

China finally admitted the problem and started looking for solutions after the pollutants in the air reached extreme levels last winter. In January, these levels were 10 to 15 times what the World Health Organization classifies as a health risk.

The Living Cuve, designed by Till Könneker from illDesigns, is the best proof.

The minimalist and multi-functional piece of furniture has a place for everything, a lot of space on the outside for the things you like to see and even more in the inside for the stuff you want to keep hidden. And there is a place for sleeping above it all. It sounds perfect for a bachelor pad.

A house for all seasons usually means one that is perfect only for moderate days and doesn’t protect it’s inhabitants very well if the weather is extremely cold or hot. If it is made for winter it will be horrible to live in it during summer months and vice versa.

But the D*Dynamic modular home designed by D*Haus can respond dynamically to its environment by controlled adaptation to seasonal, meteorological and astronomical conditions. The design allows adaptation from winter to summer, and day to night by literally moving inside itself. That means that the heavy external walls unfold into internal walls allowing glass internal walls to become facades, while the doors become windows.

During the cold season the house is in a square formation, with small windows and high thermal mass, but when the climate warms the house opens up allowing light and air to penetrate the inside of the building.

The house opens up to respond to the environmental conditions, much like a flower opening over the course of a day, this being another great concept that mimics nature. Also, the thoughtful design uses the solar radiation as a cheap and abundant source of energy. This energy can be used to heat spaces during winter, provide hot water and even generate ventilation for cooling in summer.
